Wyse' Winterm(TM)4000 Series Enhanced Network Computer Wins
"Best of COMDEX/Fall '96" for Best System

First-to-market NC line takes top honors two years running

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- COMDEX --November 21, 1996 -- For the second year in a row, Wyse Technology’s Winterm(TM) product line won top honors in BYTE Magazine’s annual "Best of COMDEX" competition. The new Winterm 4000 Series of enhanced network computers (ENC(TM) ) was named "Best System" at the 1996 awards ceremony this week in Las Vegas, Nevada. One of more than 2000 products nominated, the 4000 Series won one of only 13 awards.

Code-named "Boogie Board," this latest addition to the Winterm thin-client product line boasts lightening-quick speed and Java (TM) applet execution. The Winterm 4000 Series also provides easy access to email and other Internet/Intranet programs including HTML-based Web browsers, UNIX and mainframe data, and leading office productivity applications like Microsoft WORD and Excel for Windows, as well as the just-announced Microsoft Office 97(TM) and Office for Java(TM) from Corel.

"We’re very honored to have won the BYTE award twice in a row. The past year’s experience with the Winterm 2000 Series yielded valuable information about our customers' needs for network computers," said David Brooks, Wyse VP of Advanced Development and project leader for the Winterm 4000. "We incorporated those feature requests into the 4000 Series and created the most robust Java thin-client available for the NC power-user --customers who need a browser and local application execution, including custom Java apps."

Bridging the gap between Larry Ellison’s (of Oracle) prescription for a Java-based network computer (defined in the Network Computer Reference Profile with which the 4000 Series is fully compliant) and the need to provide access to ever-popular Microsoft Windows-based applications, the Winterm 4000 Series delivers both of these plus access to legacy information on UNIX servers and mainframes, in a truly server-agnostic environment, hence its "enhanced" network computer moniker. This "best of both worlds" strategy makes the Winterm 4000 Series ideal for network-centric corporate computing in heterogeneous environments.

Wyse introduced the Winterm 2000 Series of network computers at last year’s COMDEX, during the same week Ellison first suggested the need for such a device. During that show BYTE Magazine honored the Wyse Winterm 2000 Series with a 1995 Best of COMDEX award. Since then, the innovative Winterm product line has remained the only network computer to ship in volume, even amidst claims of similar products by industry giants and newcomers alike.

Over the past year, Winterm 2000 Series devices have been installed by Fortune 2000 corporations, schools and governments around the world. The Winterm desktop is fast becoming favored for its low-maintenance, easy access to popular and custom daily and legacy applications , low cost and ability to thrive in a multiplatform environment.

Winterm desktops (including the new 4000 Series) come in a variety of forms including a modular, book-size version for versatile use and connection to any VESA-standard monitor -- including WYSEvision professional-use monitors. Built to withstand the rigors of medical and industrial as well as office environments, Winterm desktops are also available with the monitor built in, in a range of sizes for any office; and in the just-announced 2600 model with a sleek, flat-panel, active-matrix display. All Winterm desktops come complete with keyboard and mouse, with prices starting below US$1000 (MSRP).
